The Open Window scoops gold, silver and merit at the 2008 Assegai Awards

In its first year of participation in the Direct Marketing Association's (DMA) Assegai Awards, The Open Window School of Visual Communication's design students, in collaboration with marketing students from Tuks, received several accolades in the Student Category of this prestigious annual competition.

It was also the first time that The Open Window's Communication department has teamed up with the Marketing department of the University of Pretoria, resulting in dynamic campaigns where marketing theory and design excellence combined to create effective and exciting outcomes. These projects surely laid the ground for future collaboration between these two institutions.

According to the DMA they received a total of 147 entries from over 40 agencies, corporate and individuals. Of these entries, 78 made it through to finals and 43 finalists received awards at a ceremony presented by the South African Post Office at Gallagher Estates on Thursday 6 November. Standard Bank sponsored the Student Awards.

The Open Window continued its winning path this year by earning the following awards in the category Student Campaign of the Year:

  • A Gold Assegai went to The Open Window and University of Pretoria for Thusa Cell C Thusa Themba. The TOW students in this group were: Excelda Verwayen, Janine van Schoor, Emil Böhme, Adriaan de la Rey, Berna Hancke, Armand van Schalkwyk

  • A Silver Assegai went to The Open Window and University of Pretoria for Standard Bank Achiever campaign. The TOW students in this group were: Jeanine Coleman and Arthur Twigge.

  • A Merit award went to Bianca Liebenberg from The Open Window for Freedom Fighters Standard Bank campaign.

The students, under the guidance of Wiehan de Jager, department head in Communication Design, made everyone proud, displaying the professional standard that The Open Window strives for, mastering the development of concept and skillful design execution into award winning work.
