New Year's resurrection for PR
[Marcus Brewster] End-of-year reflection is the tipping point for New Year resolution. And as I look back on the public relations year in review, I see much to excite - and alarm - me. All of the excitement comes from external developments like the rise of social and digital media and the growth of the industry (but more of that, ominously, later). All the alarm comes from looking inwards at the profession. Here's the gauntlet - compared to the ad industry, PR has become rote and stagnant. It lacks creativity, it lacks the wow-factor. 15 Dec 2008 12:40

A web wrap-up of 2008
[Lyndi Lawson] 2008 is almost over and it sure has been interesting - UK banks cancelled their Christmas parties; the global economy is in a recession; the world is holding its breath waiting to see if America's new president will be the one to save us all, and South African politics has certainly taken a couple of unforeseen turns. Of course, the web is an important part of this rapidly changing world. 12 Dec 2008 09:52

ANC brand's intellectual property management
[Gillian Rightford] Charting the trials and tribulations of the ANC over the course of 2008 will no doubt make for a very interesting case study. Not in politics, but in brand management and on the "un-intellectual" approach to its intellectual property. 10 Dec 2008 10:32
PR - viable marketing investment in economic downturn
[Jacki McEwen] When economic times begin to get tough, investing in public relations as a marketing alternative can maintain and strengthen brand awareness, while offering a strong financial return on investment. Though in South Africa the PR route is often not considered, as a common response is to downscale or ‘hold' all marketing activities, but this knee-jerk reaction can be detrimental to the positioning of a brand or company during an economic downturn. 9 Dec 2008 11:40

How politicians fail to peddle policies to the public
[Thabani Khumalo] Governments in a democracy seldom influence their image favourably by ignoring the role played by the mainstream media in providing political, economic and social information - and in interpreting events for their citizens. Politicians, therefore have a responsibility to promote access to their offices and services, and thus enhance their image and building their reputation. 5 Dec 2008 10:44
PR - a confused identity and an inferiority complex
[Phillip van Staden] “How would you define public relations?” Ask anybody that question - including captains of industry - and I'm willing to bet that the answer will either be something about ‘publicity', or no answer at all, just a furrowed brow and an inaudible mutter. Then ask a PR practitioner to define PR - clearly, plainly and simply. 2 Dec 2008 09:53
Single platform campaigns return results
[Thendo Ratshitanga] Effective integration of various key strategic communications within an organisation yields far better marketing results than bringing together various different service providers such as an advertising agency, a branding specialist and a public relations consultancy to work together. 2 Dec 2008 09:40
